One of the lessons I learnt very early on with CoVi Analytics when setting up a remote team was – Manage deliverables not time.
Far too often I see managers clocking in when their team members come into work, break for lunch and leave for home. This leads to a culture of face-timing and low productivity, where people tend to stretch their tasks into the allotted time.
Now that most office goers are working from home, this may be a good time to try a new management style of managing deliverables rather than checking up on your team by pinging emails and timing the response (I have seen this happen).
Remember, everyone will have unique circumstances at home (Kids not at school, pets, elderly family members etc.) which makes it challenging to be strictly bound to a desk 9:00 to 5:00 while being at home – some may not even have desks. So rather than attempting to chain your staff to a desk from 9:00 to 5:00, empower them by managing their deliverables rather than time.
